CROCHETING 101 :Terms and Abbreviations. 

Good morning beautiful people, I hope you are well and looking forward to a great day ahead. Today I would like to focus on terms and abbreviations used by crocheters around the world.I was motivated to do this article by a friend of mine who prefers crotcheting to knitting. This article will be beneficial to a beginner crocheter who may be having a hard time interpreting patterns written by other people as most crocheters use abbreviations when writing patterns so as to save time. In the coming weeks I will be showing you how these terms and abbreviations apply during crotcheting. So let’s get started. 
Crocheting can be defined as the art or process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. 

A crochet hook also known as the Shepherd’s hook is a tool consisting of a slender handle with a hook on one or both ends which is used to pull thread or yarn through loops to create crochet stitches. 

Commonly used terms and abbreviations include :

() =alternate instructions 

[] =repeat a series of instructions given inside the brackets 

*=repeat instructions following single asterisks as directed 

* *=repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed 

“=inches 

Ch(s) =chain (s) 

Cl =cluster 

Sc=single crochet 

Dc=double crochet 

Hdc=half double crochet 

Fsc=foundation single crochet 

Fdc=foundation double crochet 

Sk=skip 

Sl st=slip stitch 

Yoh=yarn over hook

Yo =yarn over 

BL=Back loop

FL=front loop 

BP=Back post 

FP=Front post 

Flp=through front loop only 

Bpdc=Back post double crochet 

Fpdc=Front post double crochet 

Bpsc=Back post single crochet 

Fpsc=Front post single crochet 

Tr=treble /triple crochet 

Tr tr =triple treble crochet 

Bptr=Back post treble crochet 
Fptr=Front post treble crochet 

Sh=Shell 

Tss=Tunisian simple stitch 

Tks=Tunisian knit stitch 

Tps=Tunisian purl stitch 

Tdc=Tunisian double crochet 

WS=Wrong side 

RS=Right side 

MC=Main colour 

CC =Contrasting colour 

P= Picot 

Pat= Pattern 

Pop= Popcorn 

Rnd(s) = round (s) 

Dec= Decrease 

Inc= Increase 

Prev= Previous 

PM= Place marker 

Cont= Continue 

Bet= Between 

Alt = Alternate 

Rem= Remaining 

Rep= Repeat 

Rev sc= Reverse single crochet 

Esc= Extended single crochet 

Eesc= Extra extended single crochet 

Esk= Edge Solomon’s knot

Dc cl= Double crochet cluster 

Ehdc= Extended half double crochet 

Etr=Extended treble crochet 

Lsc= Long single crochet 

Ldc= Long double crochet 

LTR= Linked treble crochet 

Qtr = Quadruple treble crochet 

Htr= Half treble crochet 

Dtr= Double treble crochet 

Tr spl= Treble split 

Tr dec= Treble decrease 

Tr2tog= Treble two together 

Tr4tog= Treble four together 

Dbl sh= Double shell stitch 

DNT dc= Do not turn double crochet 

DC DEC= Double crochet decrease 

Dc2tog = Double crochet two together 

Sc dec= Single crochet decrease 

Sc2tog = Single crochet two together 

Sc ps= Single crochet puff stitch 

Ps= Puff stitch
