DIY: The Phone Case Project.

Howdy positive thinkers and team Yarnkara, its been a while. I hope that you are safe and positive wherever you are.
Today I will be letting you in on some easy phone case projects that you can make for yourselves or for any special people in your lives as presents.

I found that these phone cases come in handy when you are trying to protect your phone from scratches and they also cushion your phone from hard falls. The phone case allows one to carry their phone around when going for short walks or when going to run a quick errand. They are easy to make and any beginner crocheter can do it with ease.

This project is however a customised project since you have to know the measurement of your phone so that you can make a phone case that will be a perfect fit for your phone. That means that if you are making a phone case for someone else, make sure that you know the exact measurement of  the phone in question.

Materials needed

  • Yarn of preferred colour and size.(In my projects I used chunky yarn and fine yarn)
  • A crochet hook of required size. (In the projects with chunky yarn, I used a size 6 mm crochet hook and for the ones with fine yarn, I used a size 3.5 mm crochet hook)
  • A tape measure.
  • A tapestry needle ( To weave in the loose ends and to sew in buttons).
  • Buttons (optional).
  • A pair of scissors.

Stitches used.

Double crochet stitches (dc sts)

Single crochet stitches ( sc sts)

Made with fine yarn.
Made with butterfly chunky yarn
Made with robin chunky yarn

The pattern.

Round 1: Make a chain of fourteen stitches then dc on the fourth stitch from the hook, you will have 2 dc sts then work ten more dc stitches along the foundation chain, you will have 12 stitches then work 12 more dc sts on the other side of your foundation chain to make a total of 24 dc sts. Slip stitch on the 3rd chain of the chain 3 stitches.

Round 2: Chain 3, dc on the next 23 stitches working on the back loops only.

Phone sleeve

Round 3-12: Work 24 dc stitches in each round working on back loops only.

Remember that the number of rounds you work for this project completely depends on the size of the phone you are making the sleeve for.

Phone sleeve with flower

When using different colours of yarn, make sure you maintain a certain pattern when changing colours.

You can add a flower on the front or back depending on your preference.

Phone cases
Yarnkara phone sleeves

You can customize your phone case in different ways like for instance you sew on a button , you can add a fastener and some beads, you can even add a flap and pockets.

DIY: Wavy infinity scarf project.

Hallo crocheters and positive thinkers around the world, I hope you had a great weekend and looking forward to a fulfilling and positive week ahead. Today I would like to focus on how to crochet a warm chunky infinity scarf. The pattern used is a repeat of different variations of the double crochet stitch, giving the scarf a wavy look.

I loved this project because it does not only allow you to use different colours of yarn in one project but also tests one’s crochet skills in each and every row you work and the use of chunky yarn makes the scarf to be warm.

Materials needed.

Chunky yarn of preferred colour ( You can use more than one colour of yarn in one project). In all the scarves I made, I used robin chunky yarn.

Crochet hook of preferred size (I used a size 6 crochet hook).

A tapestry needle (To join my ends and weave in the loose ends.)

A pair of scissors.

A measuring tape.

Stitches used.

Double crochet stitch.

Skills needed.

Increasing.

Decreasing.

Infinity scarf

The pattern.

The foundation chain for this project can be worked in two ways:

  • Make a chain of 30 stitches then double crochet on the fourth stitch from your hook and work 26 dc stitches on the rest of the stitches on your foundation chain to make a total of 28 dc sts for your first row.
  • Work a chainless base of 28 double crochet stitches to make your first row.

I used the chainless base but if you are not familiar with how to work a chainless foundation use the first method above. Make sure you have 28 dc stitches for your first row.

Round 2: Chain 3, turn your work then work 2 dc stitches in the same stitch; work 3 dc stitches in each of the next 3 stitches, in the next 3 stitches work 3 dc stitches with one top, in the next 3 stitches work 3 dc stitches with one top, work 3 dc stitches in each of the next 3 stitches; In the next 2 stitches work 3 dc stitches in each stitch, then work 3 dc stitches in each of the next 3 stitches, in the next 3 stitches work 3 dc stitches with one top, in the next 3 stitches work 3 dc stitches with one top again then work 3 dc stitches in each of the next 3 stitches and on the last stitch work 3 dc stitches in the same stitch.

Round 3: Ch 3 turn,2dc in same stitch, 3dc in next 3sts, 3dc with one top, 3dc with one top, 3dc in next 3sts, 3 dc in same stitch, 3 dc in same stitch, 3 dc in next 3 sts, 3 dc with one top, 3 dc with one top, 3 dc in next 3 sts , 3 dc in last st.

As you may have noticed, this project is worked by repeating round 2 until you reach a height that works for you. The infinity scarf is supposed to go round your neck twice  it could be longer  , so you are to crochet until you get to a height that suits you.

In case you are using different colours of yarn, you are to crochet for a number of rows then change your yarn and keep crocheting again for the same number of rows then change your yarn. This will ensure that you maintain uniformity in the pattern.

Using different colours of yarn.

If you decide to use one colour of yarn, you will only add yarn to your project when your first / second ball of yarn is finished .

Brown infinity scarf

You may also have noticed that the increases and decreases in this project are worked along each row of the project.

Infinity scarf

For round 4  and all the other rounds: Ch3 turn, 2 dc in same st, 3 dc in next 3 sts, 3dc with one top twice, 3 dc in next 3 sts, 3 dc in same st twice, 3 dc in next 3 sts, 3 dc with one top twice, 3 dc in next 3 sts, 3 dc in last st.

All rows should have a total of 28 stitches.

Infinity scarves

Once you reach the required height use your tapestry needle to join the ends of your scarf and then weave in your loose ends.

DIY: Infinity cowl project.

Hey #teampositivity, I hope you are having a great day wherever you are. I am sending you positive vibes to keep you grounded.

Its been a cold month and I saw it fit to give you the pattern of the infinity cowl so that you can make yourselves some cowls to keep you warm and stylish during the cold season. The infinity cowl forms an infinite kind of loop and as such allows you to wear it in a number of different styles. Its also light and small enough to be carried in one’s handbag and can be worn by both males and females. It can be made in a variety of colours to suit one’s preference.

The infinity cowl project is an easy one as long as you are familiar with the types of stitches to use in this project. In case you are having trouble understanding the pattern, feel free to refer to my previous articles on crochet stitches. So, let’s get started:

Materials needed:

Yarn of preferred colour and size (I used robin chunky yarn).

A crochet hook of preferred size to go with the yarn (I used a size 5 crochet hook).

Tapestry needle ( To weave in your loose ends).

A pair of scissors.

Stiches used:

Chain stitches (Ch sts)

Single crochet stitches (Sc sts)

Double crochet stitches (Dc sts)

Front post double crochet stitches (FPdc sts)

Back post double crochet stitches (BPdc sts)

Skill level:

Intermediate crocheters.

The pattern.

Make a slip knot.

Make a chain of 130 stitches for your foundation chain, slip stitch on the first stitch you made to make a continuous loop. You have now joined your foundation chain.

Infinity cowls

Round 1: Chain 1, work 1sc in the same stitch to make the first stitch of your first row, then work 1 sc stitches in each of the next 129 stitches. You will have a total of 130 sc stitches.

Instead of ending that round by slip stitching into the first sc stitch, you turn your work upside down so that the side you just worked is facing down and the unworked part of your foundation chain is now facing you.

With your crochet hook on the other side, work 1 sc stitch on the stitch that is now facing you, which will be directly above your first stitch on the other side; then continue working 129 more single crochet stitches in each of the next 129 stitches.

Note: You will have to work on both sides of the foundation chain so that you can create the infinity pattern. That means that when working on this project, you should keep in mind that one complete round is made of 260 stitches, meaning that you have to work 130 stitches on the top of your foundation chain and another 130 stitches  on the bottom before slip stitching to end the row.

The last sc stitch you make will lead you right back to the top of the foundation chain where you made your first single crochet, then you slip stitch.

Infinity cowl

Round 2: Chain 3, work 1dc stitches on the back loops of the single crochet stitches that you made for your first round. You should have a total of 260 dc sts for your second round. Slip stitch on the 3rd stitch of the chain 3 stitch.

Infinity cowl

Round 3: This is where you start working your front post and back post double crochet stitches to give you the ribbing effect.

Chain 3, work 1 FPdc then 1 BPdc .

Ch3,FPdc,BPdc,*FPdc,BPdc* .

Repeat from *to* around.Slip stitch on the 3rd stitch of the ch3 st.

Remember, one complete row consists of 260 stitches, which means that for each row you should work 260 stitches of FPdc and BPdc stitches.

Infinity cowl

Round 4-10:  Chain 3 , FPdc,BPdc, *FPdc,BPdc*.

Repeat from *to * around.

DIY:Crochet indoor shoes.

Hey readers, happy new month.I am hoping that this new month will be full of bliss, peace, positivity and breakthroughs. I made myself some indoor shoes to help me keep warm and I found out that these shoes are convenient, comfy and the warmth is just amazing. So I’ve decided to give you guys the pattern I used so that you can make yourselves some pretty indoor shoes. One thing about this project though is that it varies depending on one’s shoe size.I am a size six,so the pattern is for my shoe size,so when you work on your project make sure you alter the foundation chain to suit your shoe size.

Materials needed:

Yarn of preferred size and colour.

A crochet hook .(I used a size 4.5 hook).

Stitch markers. (You can use yarn of contrasting colour)

A pair of scissors.

A tapestry needle.

Stitches used:

Double crochet stitches (dc sts).

Single crochet stitches. (Sc sts)

Slip stitches. (Sl sts).

Techniques used:

Increases.

Decreases.

Binding off.

The pattern.

Make a foundation chain of 29 stitches.Double crochet on the fourth chain from the hook; you will have your first two stitches.Work 24dc stitches on the next stitches then on your 25th stitch, work 7 dc stitches (our first increase).

Work 25 dc stitches until you get to the stitch below your first stitch and work 4 dc stitches in that stitches (second increase).Slip stitch on the third stitch of the chain 3 stitch.

Round 1: Chain 3,skip your next stitch ,work 25 dc stitches on the next stitches  and on your 27th stitch(where you did your first increases) and work 2dc stitches in each of the 7 stitches; work 25 dc st in your next stitches and when you get to where you did your second increase, work  2dc stitches in each of the four stitches.Slip stitch on the 3rd stitch of the chain 3 stitch.

Round 2: Chain 3,work 1dc in the same stitch, skip the next stitch then work dc stitches along your row and when you get to your 1st increase,  work 1dc stitches on the next 7 stitches, on the next 5 stitches work 2 dc stitches in each stitch then work 1dc stitches in each of the next stitches until you remain with 3 stitches then work 2dc stitches in each of those 3 stitches.Slip stitch on the 3rd stitch of the chain 3 stitch.

The base of your shoes is now done.Remember to make two of these for both of your shoes.

Round 3: Work 1 dc stitches around your sole, working on the back loops only. This separates the base from the rest of the shoe.

Round 4: Work 1dc stitches in each of the stitches around this time working in your stitches normally.

Indoor shoes

Now,let’s start our decrease.

Fold the fabric into two then divide your stitches into more than half of your stitches. My *more than half* was 58 stitches.

Place your first stitch marker on the 1st stitch and on the 58th stitch.Make sure your stitches are equal on both sides of your shoe.

From where your chain 3 stitch is,work 1 dc stitches until you get to your first stitch marker then start your decrease. Work 2dc stitches with one top until you get to where your second stitch marker is  then complete the rest of the row with 1 dc stitches in each of the remaining stitches.

Crochet indoor shoes

Work 1dc stitches in each stitch around.

Indoor shoes

Binding off.

You either slip stitch in each stitch around or work 1 sc stitches in each stitch around.

CROCHETING IN CIRCLES

Hallo guys how is your day coming along? I hope you are positive about life wherever you are. I would like to thank all who have been supporting me so far, am truly greatful. Please follow my blog for more to come, I have alot of amazing stuff on the way.

Today I would like to wind up on crocheting stitches by doing an article on how to crochet in circles for instance like when crocheting a tam, a beret hat, a beanie and even some types of bags.I will also give an insight on the importance of following a crochet pattern or stitch diagrams. Lets get started :

Working in circles

When  working on a project that requires you to work in rounds or in circles, it is required of you to create a center ring. The center ring works as the foundation row for all projects worked in circles.

The center ring is created by working several chain stitches which are then joined together by slip stitching the last chain on your hook to first chain stitch you made.

Working stitches in the ring

  1. Chain six stitches (ch 6)
  2. Insert your hook into the first chain stitch you made to form a ring.
  3. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch and through the loop on your hook and you will be left with one stitch on your hook. (sl st)
  4. After making the center ring you will be ready to work the first round. Crochet your turning chain so as to bring your hook upto the proper level to allow you work the next round of stitches. (rem, the number of stitches on your turning chain depends on the stitch you are working on. Refer to article on :crocheting:the stitches)make your turning chain, lets say you are using the double crochet stitches, after the turning chain continue working double crochet stitches around following the pattern you are using for your project.

In the case of the tam above;

I worked a chain of six stitches, slip stitched, made a turning chain of three and worked eleven more stitches inside the ring to make a total of twelve stitches.

The second round is worked by putting two double crochet stitches in each stitch that we made on our first round. This is an increase round.

In the case of the pink beret hat with hearts below;

I made a chain of eight stitches, slip stitched, made a turning chain of three and worked twenty three more stitches inside the ring to make a total of twenty four stitches for your first round.

From there on I followed the pattern I was using for my project (written instructions will be available next week on the tam and Beret hat with hearts projects).

Keep in mind that :

The number of stitches in the beginning chain determines the size of the hole that the center ring creates as well as how many stitches you can work into the center ring.

Make sure the ring is large enough to accommodate the number of stitches that you will be working in it.

On the other hand make sure it’s not so long that you have a big loose hole in the center.

When you are working on a pattern, it tells you how many stitches you need for the proper size center ring.

CROCHET PATTERNS.

Crochet patterns can be downloaded, can come with certain yarn or can be written by any crocheter.

Crochet patterns require one to know and understand the crochet terms and abbreviations. You should be familiar with stitch abbreviations and be able to interpret them. This is because crochet patterns are written in abbreviations to save space and time.

The pattern will tell you the number of stitches to work for the beginning chain, where you need to increase or decrease, where to make the turning chain and whether to turn or not among others.

Make sure you follow the pattern to the latter.

Following a stitch diagram in crochet :

Requires one to understand and be able to interpret the symbols and abbreviations of crochet.

The diagram usually shows only a few rows to avoid repetition and also to save time and space.

The pattern tells you how many rows you should make to complete your project.

  • When working in rows, the right side row number is placed on the right hand side of the diagram,  meaning you work from the right side to the left side. On the wrong side rows the number is on the left hand side so you follow the diagram from left to right.
  • When working in rounds you read the diagram counterclockwise, without turning between rows unless the instructions specifically instructs you to.
  • Stitch diagrams are generally laid out from the right handed crocheter’s point of view, but left handed crocheters can read them just as well, if they reverse the direction of the pattern and work from left to right instead of right to left. So a left handed crocheter when working in rounds still follows the pattern counterclockwise, but works the piece clockwise, thus reversing the direction of the pattern.

Until next week God bless.

THE STITCHES: Decreases and Increases.

Good morning beautiful people,I hope you are well and looking forward to a great weekend ahead. Today I would like to focus on how to increase or decrease your crocheted  fabric. This may be necessary in shaping your fabric to the required shape or size. As such its extremely important that you know the right way to either decrease or increase your crocheted fabric so that you don’t loose the pattern you are working with. Its is however very easy to do an increase or a decrease.  Below  are written instructions on how to accomplish the above using different stitches. Keep in mind that we will encounter what we have already talked about in our previous articles, in the projects that we will be doing in the coming weeks, so if you are having any difficulties at all, don’t worry I will have videos for these.
What does ‘increasing stitches’ mean?

Increasing stitches during crochet simply means that you add stitches to a crocheted row, so that it has more stitches than the previous one.

Depending on the type of design that you are creating, you can increase either at the beginning, middle, end of a row or in each and every stitch across a row or anywhere you want the shaping to occur.

What does ‘decreasing stitches’  mean?

This simply means that you remove stitches from a crocheted row, so that it has less stitches than the previous one.

You can decrease at the middle of a row, anywhere you want shaping to occur or even in each and every stitch across a row.

Increasing with double crochet stitches

To make an increase on a knitted fabric using  double crochet stitches requires one to either :add a stitch at the beginning, the middle or the end of the  double-crocheted row.

That means that where you want to increase, you work two double crochet stitches on the same stitch.  If you are increasing at the beginning of the row, you work your chain of three(turning chain) which works as the first double crochet stitch of the next row then on the same stitch that is directly below  the chain 3 on your hook, work one double crochet(rem this is the stitch that you would normally skip after making the chain of 3)

You have just worked an increase on your first stitch of the next row.

Decreasing with double crochet stitches.

Double crochet stitches are decreased in the same places that you would normally do an increase i.e either at the middle or ends of the rows. A very nice and neat way to decrease is to work two double crochet stitches with one top i.e :

  • Make a swatch of double crochet stitches
  • Work a number of rows, say five rows of double crochet stitches.
  • Let’s try to decrease on the sixth row
  • Make a chain of three(turning chain) which is your first stitch on the sixth row
  • Work a double crochet stitch in the next stitch and along the row until you get to where you want to do the decrease.
  • To do the decrease ;yarn over, go through the next stitch, yarn over, pull up the yarn, you will have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over pull yarn through two loops, you will remain with two loops on your hook. With the two loops on your hook, yarn over and go through the next stitch, yarn over and pull yarn through the stitch, you will have four loops on your hook, yarn over pull through two, you will have three loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all the three loops on your hook.

That is how you work two double crochet stitches with one top and it’s a perfect way to decrease.

Decreasing with slip stitches

Slip stitches can be used in decreasing or binding off crocheted fabrics but cannot be used to increase your fabric.

  • Make a swatch of five rows of double crochet stitches
  • On the sixth row is where we want our decrease to begin
  • Do not make a chain of 3 for your turning chain, just turn and slip stitch from the beginning stitch to where you want the decrease to end then make a chain of three  and continue working your double crochet stitches to the end of the row.

A slip stitch is made by :yarning over and pulling up the yarn over through the one loop on your hook ;leaving you with only one loop on your hook.

Increasing with single crochet stitches

To increase your crocheted fabric with single crochet stitches, you simply work two single crochet stitches in one stitch. The best place to work the increase is in the middle of the fabric and not at the beginning. This is because when using single crochet stitches, the chain one stitch at the end of every row(turning chain) does not count as your first stitch of the next row as it would be in the case of double crochet, half double crochet or even treble crochet stitches. This means that when using single crochet stitches you work the turning chain at the end of every row then after turning your work, you work a single crochet stitch in the first stitch of your next row to work as your first stitch of the next row. This means that increasing at the beginning of the row would be quite difficult as it would require you to work two single crochet stitches in the first stitch of the next row after working the turning chain. It is therefore advisable to increase at the middle or along the row to keep your work neat.

Decrease in basic Afghan.

When working with the basic Afghan stitch, you decrease in the first half of a row of basic Afghan stitch, subtracting loops from your hook ;then you work off all the loops in the second half.

  • Use a swatch of ten.
  • Work two rows of tunisian purl stitches
  • Let’s decrease on the first and second stitch on the third row
  • With one loop on your hook, insert your hook in the first and second vertical bars in the row below (rem we go through one vertical stitch normally)
  • Yarn over and draw yarn through both stitches : one decrease at the beginning of the row is complete.
  • Work in basic Afghan stitch across the rest of the row and you will have nine loops on your hook.

Work the second half  as you would normally do (please refer to previous post on continuation of stitches)

Incase you need additional information on anything you can leave your question, suggestion or comment and I will get back to you. Until next week have a positive time.

Good afternoon to all my readers, I hope you are having a positive week. This article is a continuation from last week’s article on basic crocheting stitches. These are written instructions on how to work those individual stitches, I would advise you read through, then get your crochet hook and yarn and try the instructions practically. For those having a hard time to comprehend the instructions especially for the beginners, don’t worry I will have videos on these in the coming weeks.
Lets get started;

Working the Front Post Double Crochet.
The front post double crochet abbreviated as Fpdc is worked on the post of a double crochet stitch. That means you should:
Make a slip knot.
Work a foundation chain of the required number of stitches.
Work double crochet stitches across your foundation chain.
At the end of the chain, chain two(turning chain) and turn(rem the turning chain works as the first stitch of your next row).
Yarn over, pass your hook from front to back of the space between the posts of the first and second double crochet stitches on your first row, then from back to front; your hook will be between your second and third double crochet stitches on your first row.
Yarn over and pull the yarn around the post; you will have three loops on your hook, Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through the last two.
Your Fpdc is complete.
Repeat this across the row.

Working the Back Post Double crochet.
It is abbreviated as Bpdc and its worked on the posts of double crochet stitches which means;
Make a slip knot.
Work your foundation chain, then work double crochet stitches across your chain.
At the end of the row chain two(turning chain) and turn.
Yarn over, pass your hook from back to front of the space between the posts of the first and second double crochet stitches on your first row, then from front to back, your hook will be between the posts of the second and third double crochet stitches on your row below; yarn over, pull the yarn from back to front then from front to back; you will have three loops on your hook;
yarn over and pull through two, yarn over and pull through the last two.
There you have your Bpdc.
Repeat this to the end of the row.

Working the Puff stitch.
The puff stitch which is abbreviated PS adds great texture to crocheted fabric as it literally puffs up into an oval shape.
It can be worked in the following two ways;
Make a slip knot.
Work your foundation chain.
Double crochet into the fourth stitch from your hook but only go through the first two loops on your hook and leave the last two loops on your hook, with the two loops left on your hook, yarn over insert your hook into the same stitch you have just worked and pull through the yarn, you will have four loops on your hook, yarn over pull through two loops and you will be left with three loops on your hook, yarn over go into the same stitch a third time, yarn over and pull the yarn through you will have five loops on your hook, yarn over pull yarn through two loops and you will be left with four loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through the four loops and chain one to close the puff stitch.
The secret here is to work three double crochet stitches with one top and then chain one.

The second way to do this is;
This is how I do it when I’m working in rounds.
I make a chain of six and slip stitch on the first chain that I made to form a ring.
I then work my Puff stitches inside the ring in the following way;
Yarn over, insert your hook inside the ring from front to back, yarn over and pull up the yarn, you will have three loops on your hook, yarn over insert your hook inside the ring from front to back a second time, yarn over and pull up a loop; you will have five loops on your hook and then yarn over, insert your hook in the ring a third time, yarn over and pull up the yarn, you will have a total of seven loops on your hook, yarn over and pull the yarn through all the seven loops and chain one to close.
Repeat this across the row.

Working the Tunisian Puff Stitch.
It is also know as a purl stitch.
It is a variation of basic Afghan stitch.
The Tunisian purl is began with a foundation row made of basic afghan stitch.
Work your foundation chain say of ten stitches (rem you need to start with a foundation row since afghan stitches require one to pull up loops along existing stitches.
Its worked in two halves.

First half:
Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop; you will have two loops on your hook.
Insert hook into the third stitch, yarn over pull up a loop; you will have four loops. Keep drawing up your loops until you have worked the foundation chain to the end; the number of loops on your hook should be equal to the number of stitches on your foundation chain.
This is the first half of your foundation row of basic afghan stitch.

Second half:
Yarn over, draw up the yarn through the first loop on your hook(be sure to pull through one loop only).
Yarn over, draw up the yarn through the next two loops on your hook(go through two loops from here to end of row)
Yarn over, draw up the yarn through the next two loops on your hook
Repeat until you remain with one loop on your hook.
Your foundation row of basic afghan stitch is complete.

N/B:
Your foundation row will be having vertical stitches on the right side, this is where you will be drawing your loops from, for the next row.
With your one loop on the hook, insert your hook under the next vertical stitch and pull up a loop; repeat this to the end of the foundation row.
When you have ten loops on your hook, yarn over, pull the yarn through first loop, yarn over draw up the yarn on the next two loops and repeat this until you are left with one loop on your hook.

Working the Tunisian Stockinette Stitch.
Its also known as a knit stitch.
Its also a common variation of the basic afghan stitch.
The Tunisian Stockinette is worked beginning with a foundation row made of basic afghan stitch.
Make a foundation chain of ten stitches.
You should start with a foundation row since Afghan stitches require one to draw up loops through existing stitches.

First half:
Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up the yarn; you will have two loops on your hook.
Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up the yarn; you will have three loops on your hook. Repeat this until you reach the end of the foundation chain (rem the number of loops on your hook should be equals to the chain stitches you made).
The first half is complete.

Second half
Yarn over pull through one loop on your hook.
Yarn over pull through two loop on your hook.
Yarn over pull through two loops on your hook and repeat this to the end of the row where you will be having only one loop on your hook.

Now here is where the difference comes in;
To begin your first row
With one loop on your hook, insert your hook through the front and back strands of the next vertical stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, repeat this to the end of the row then; yarn over, pull yarn through first loop only, yarn over pull up yarn through two loops, yarn over pull up yarn through two loops, repeat this to the end of the row where you will be left with one loop on your hook.

CROCHETING:THE STITCHES

Hallo crocheters, aspiring, crocheters, knitters all over the world and to all positive thinkers out there.I hope you are having a beautiful day though for those in Kenya I know the weather is killing you that’s why I saw it fit to do an article on the basic stitches of crocheting so that I can help any beginner out there who is interested in knitting something for themselves for this cold weather.I hope this article will be easy to comprehend, incase you get confused you can recheck the articles on crotcheting terms and abbreviations. So lets get started:

How to crochet the chain stich(Foundation chain).
The chain stitch is abbreviated as ch st and its also known as the foundation chain when beginning a project. This is beacause almost every crochet pattern begins with a chain stitch.
If you are working in rows then your first stitch in each new row is a number of chain stitches also known as the turning chain.
When working in rounds, you first work a few chain stitches and join them to form a ring where you will then work a number of stitches inside the ring.
To create the chain stitches or the foundation chain in this case;
you make a slip knot, slide your crochet hook inside the slip knot, adjust your yarn to ensure that the slip knot is tight, yarn over and pull up the loop through the slip knot to make your first chain stitch.
Repeat this until yo get the required number of chain stitches for your project.

How to yarn over in crochet.
It is basically wrapping the yarn over your hook during the crochet process. Its the most basic step to every stitch in crocheting.
Yarn overs can be used before or after you insert the hook into the next stitch like when working the double crochet; and sometimes you yarn over two or more times depending on the stitch like in the treble stitch.
Its worked by:
making a slip knot, sliding the crochet hook into the slip knot and bringing the yarn up behind the hook and when the yarn is on your hook its called the yarn over(yo).

How to make a single crochet.
Its abbreviated as sc.
Its worked in the following way;
Make a foundation chain by working the required number of chain stitches for your project.
Insert your hook from front to back into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, pull up the yarn over through your chain stitch, you will have two loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through both loops. You have worked your single crochet.
Repeat this to the end of the chain.

How to make the half double crotchet.
The difference between the hdc and the dc or the sc is that in the hdc you pull through three loops on your hook.
You work the required numbeer of chain stitches for your foundation chain then chain two more stitches.
Yarn over, insert your hook into the third stitch from your hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on your hook, yarn over then pull through the three loops on your hook and you will have your first half double crochet.
The hdc that you have made is the second stitch on your foundation chain since the chain two works as your first stitch.
Repeat this to the end of the chain.

How to make the double crochet.
Make a foundation chain by working the required number of chain stitches lets say we need a chain of 20 stitches,so you work out 20 stitches then make an additional chain of 3 for the turning chain, yarn over, insert your hook through the front loop and under the back loop of the fourth chain from the hook.
Yarn over, gently pull up a loop through your chain stitch, yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops on your hook, yarn over pull through the last 2 loops on your hook.
You have just worked your first double crotchet which is your second stitch on your foundation chain as the turning chain works as the first stitch on your chain.
Repeat this along the foundation chain.

How to make a turning chain.
Before you begin your next row you should crochet a turning chain.
The purpose of this is to bring your yarn to the necessary height required in order to work the first stitch of your next row.
The turning stitch works as the first stitch of the next row you are going to work.
when using:
Slip stitch-0 turning chain needed
Single crochet-1
Half double crochet-2
Double crochet-3
Triple crochet-4
Triple double crochet-5

How to make a triple crochet.
Its also known as the treble crochet
Work the required number of chain stitches for the foundation chain, chain four more stitches for the turning chain, yarn over the hook twice and insert your hook on the fifth chain from the hook.
Yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have four loops on your hook.
Yarn over pull through the first two loops, yarn over pull through the next two loops on your hook, yarn over, pull through the last two loops on your hook and you have made one triple crochet.
Repeat this along the chain.

How to crochet the V stitch.
To work the v stitch, you will need to work one double crochet then a chain one then another double crochet all in the same stitch.
(dc,ch1,dc)in same stitch.
Repeat this across the row.

How to crochet the slip stitch.
Make a slip knot
Make the required number of stitches for the foundation chain.
Insert your hook into the first chain you made to form a ring
Yarn over and pull it through the loop on your hook and this makes a slip stitch.
